The political rift between Peter Obi and Kenneth Okonkwo has taken a fresh turn after Okonkwo released alleged WhatsApp chats to support his bribery claims against Obi and the Nigerian Democratic Congress.
Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, had earlier alleged that Obi and some NDC South-East leaders demanded ₦10 million from House of Representatives aspirants and ₦20 million from senatorial aspirants.
He claimed that one of the aspirants, Obunike Ohaegbu, gave him details of the alleged payments and also provided a receipt.
However, Obi’s legal team has rejected the allegations, describing them as false, malicious and damaging to his reputation.
Through his lawyers led by Alex Ejesieme, SAN, Obi demanded ₦5 billion in damages, a public apology and a withdrawal of the statements within seven days.
In response, Okonkwo shared screenshots of alleged WhatsApp conversations with Ohaegbu, insisting that the messages support his claim about irregularities in the NDC primary process.
Okonkwo said he had a duty as a lawyer and citizen to expose what he described as wrongdoing.
Ohaegbu, however, had earlier denied saying that Obi personally asked him to pay ₦10 million, insisting that his complaints about the party process were being misrepresented.
