The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to make the Calabar Port fully operational and restore Cross River State’s position as a leading tourism destination if elected president in 2027.

Obi made the commitment during an NDC town hall meeting in Calabar on Wednesday, November 4, alongside his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, party candidates and supporters. Before the meeting, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Obong of Calabar, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, who offered prayers and words of advice.

During the interactive session, residents raised concerns about the Calabar Port, tourism, insecurity, the economy and citizens’ welfare. Obi promised that an NDC-led administration would prioritise national unity, security and increased investment in critical sectors, particularly education and healthcare, while working to reduce poverty.

On tourism, he recalled the former popularity of Calabar, Obudu and other destinations in Cross River, pledging to restore their appeal. He also made a personal commitment to spend his holidays in the state if elected president. Obi further promised to revive other ports across the Niger Delta and urged party supporters to prepare to protect their votes during the 2027 elections.
