Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has inaugurated a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of pupils and teachers from Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area, saying the successful rescue of the victims does not bring full closure to the incident.
Speaking during the inauguration in Ibadan, Makinde said the panel was set up to establish the facts surrounding the abduction, identify any security lapses, and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents. He stressed that the inquiry is not intended to undermine the efforts of security agencies, but to ensure every question about the incident is thoroughly examined and lessons are learned.
The commission, chaired by Professor Mojeed Owoade, has been directed to conduct a thorough, impartial, and evidence-based investigation. Makinde assured the panel of the state’s full support and urged individuals and relevant institutions to cooperate with its work. The commission has been given four weeks to submit its report.
The Oriire school abduction saw pupils and teachers held captive for 56 days before they were rescued, an incident that prompted widespread concern and renewed calls for stronger security around schools in Oyo State.
