An early morning gas explosion rocked Liberty Junction in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday after a vehicle reportedly crashed into a gas retail outlet, triggering a fire that spread to nearby shops and a police traffic post.
The incident occurred at about 6:15 a.m., sending residents and traders scrambling for safety as thick smoke and flames engulfed parts of the busy commercial area. At least nine shops were affected, while the vehicle involved was completely burnt.
The driver and a young child were rescued from the scene. The injured driver was reportedly taken to a medical facility for treatment, although his condition was not immediately known.
The fire also damaged a nearby police traffic post and part of a drainage channel. Personnel from the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, NSCDC, NEMA and the Nigeria Police responded to the incident and worked to prevent the flames from spreading further.
The explosion caused significant traffic disruption around Liberty Junction as emergency responders battled the fire and cleared the affected area. No death was reported in the reports reviewed, while normal activities gradually returned after the situation was brought under control.
