Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leading the country’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 with President Tinubu’s mandate to represent him at the annual global gathering. During the General Debate, he delivered Nigeria’s national statement and renewed the country’s call for reform of the United Nations Security Council, including permanent representation for Africa.
The Vice President also participated in high-level discussions on Africa’s mineral resources, education financing, development, climate support and multilateral cooperation. At the Africa Minerals Strategy Group roundtable, he advocated greater processing and value addition to Africa’s mineral resources rather than continued dependence on raw mineral exports.
At an education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to education as an investment in human capital and national development. He also supported the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign and met with Nigerians in the diaspora to discuss their contributions to the country’s development.
Shettima’s return follows the conclusion of Nigeria’s engagements at the 81st UN General Assembly, held under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
