Political analyst Abbati Bako has argued that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s reported promise to restore petrol subsidies if elected president could intensify public scrutiny of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a report by Daily Post published on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Bako believes the subsidy debate could become a major campaign issue, compelling the Federal Government to explain how the savings from subsidy removal have been managed and whether Nigerians have benefited from the economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.
The analyst reportedly expressed his views in a Facebook post on Friday, October 9, 2026, following reports that Atiku had questioned the use of funds saved through the removal of petrol subsidies and indicated that he would restore the policy if elected president.
