The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and transfer of a police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
According to the Command, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives responded to intelligence about a suspect, identified as Mene Ogidi, who was allegedly apprehended while attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition.
However, during the operation, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, reportedly discharged his firearm in violation of established procedures, leading to the death of the suspect.
The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the act, describing it as a breach of Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedures.
He directed the immediate arrest of the officer, who has since been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for further action, including possible prosecution.
The Command reiterated its commitment to upholding human rights, professionalism, and accountability, stressing zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions.
The police also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that justice will be served.
