The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted a massive consignment of illicit drugs valued at about ₦18.9 billion at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

According to officials, the seizure involved 9,450 packages of cannabis weighing over 4,700kg, concealed inside imported vehicles shipped from Canada.

The Customs Area Controller, Frank Onyeka, disclosed that the container was falsely declared as carrying only used vehicles but was flagged and subjected to a full physical inspection based on credible intelligence.

During the operation, officers discovered 185 jumbo bags of cannabis hidden inside a 2010 Toyota Camry and a 2023 Chevrolet vehicle, in an attempt to evade detection.

The interception was carried out in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), highlighting strengthened inter-agency cooperation in tackling drug trafficking.

Authorities have since handed over the seized drugs to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution.

Customs officials described the operation as a major breakthrough, reaffirming their commitment to intelligence-driven enforcement and warning that there will be no safe haven for smugglers.
