Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has called for greater investment in indigenous defence technology, local manufacturing and digital infrastructure to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to tackle insecurity. He made the call on October 14, 2026, at the Defence Futures Summit organised by Kryterion Africa under the theme, “Sovereign Digital Backbone and Defence Innovation.”

The summit brought together defence leaders, international partners and technology innovators to examine how technological advancement could improve Nigeria’s defence capabilities. Discussions centred on developing homegrown solutions that address the country’s evolving security threats and protect its national interests.

Musa stressed that building a sovereign digital backbone would require sustained investment in Nigerian-developed technology, stronger participation by local manufacturers and partnerships that encourage the transfer of technical expertise. He said these efforts were essential to developing innovative solutions tailored to the country’s defence needs.

He also emphasised the importance of collaboration between the defence sector, local industries and technology innovators in building a more capable and technologically advanced defence system. The call highlights the growing focus on domestic defence production and digital innovation as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its response to security challenges.
