Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has urged Nigerians to reject politicians he accused of exploiting the suffering of citizens to pursue their presidential ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections. He described such politicians as “political gamblers” and called on voters to examine their records and intentions.

Wike made the remarks on Thursday, October 15, 2026, while delivering a keynote address at the inaugural Idoma Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Abuja, held as part of the Idoma Centenary Plus celebration. The event featured discussions on politics, leadership, equity and the struggle for fairness in Nigeria.

Speaking on the theme, “People, Politics and Power Play in Nigeria: The Agitation for Equity and Fairness,” Wike criticised politicians who, he alleged, had begun visiting internally displaced persons’ camps to mark their birthdays because they wanted to become president. He challenged Nigerians to look beyond political slogans and assess leaders based on their records in public office.

The FCT minister also argued that transferring political power from one ethnic or regional group to another would not automatically end marginalisation if the benefits of governance remained concentrated among a few people. He urged voters to prioritise accountability and measurable improvements in employment, education, healthcare, infrastructure, electricity and security when evaluating political leaders.
