The dream of a better future is becoming a reality for many persons with disabilities in Borno State who once saw begging as their only means of survival.

In a bid to promote self-reliance and economic independence, the Borno State Government, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross ICRC, has flagged off a Tricycle Workshop and Vocational Training Centre VTC established by and for persons with disabilities, aimed at equipping them with practical skills and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, said the centre reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are included in development programmes and given opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society.

The ICRC representative reaffirmed the organization’s support for initiatives that enhance the dignity and resilience of vulnerable groups.

Leaders of the disability community expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Women Affairs and the ICRC for establishing the centre, describing it as a life-changing intervention that will reduce dependence on street begging and create pathways to economic empowerment.

The newly inaugurated facility is fully equipped and ready for the commencement of training, offering renewed hope to persons with disabilities across the state.
