Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on African countries to reduce their dependence on foreign military equipment and invest in indigenous defence technology, local manufacturing and specialised training.

Akpabio delivered the message of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the opening ceremony of the Africa International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026 in Lagos on Monday, October 26.

In his address, Tinubu stressed that Africa must develop the knowledge, technology, industries and institutions required to address its security challenges. He said defence partnerships should deliver lasting benefits through technology transfer, local production and the development of African expertise.

The President noted that Africa faces several security threats, including terrorism, insurgency, maritime crime and emerging cyber threats, which require stronger regional cooperation and sustained investment. He also paid tribute to military personnel who have sacrificed their lives in defence of their countries.

Tinubu further urged African governments to embrace emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and advanced defence systems, while creating opportunities for young people to contribute to the continent’s security and technological growth.

He maintained that Africa has the talent, resources and determination to take greater responsibility for its own security, adding that a secure continent is essential for lasting peace and prosperity.
