According to a report by daily Post on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Thursday stated that it would be a difficult task for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to secure victory in the 2027 presidential election because of the numerous internal challenges confronting the party.
He said the lingering crisis within the PDP has weakened its ability to present itself as a formidable political force capable of winning the nation’s highest office.
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja, Wike maintained that the party has continued to struggle with unresolved disputes and divisions, making it increasingly difficult for it to build the level of unity required to compete effectively in a presidential contest.
According to him, the situation within the PDP has continued to affect its strength and political prospects.
The FCT minister stressed that unless the party succeeds in addressing its internal issues, its chances of emerging victorious in the next presidential election remain slim.
He indicated that political parties must first put their affairs in order before expecting to gain the confidence and support of Nigerians during a general election.
Wike also spoke on the state of opposition politics in the country, expressing concern over what he described as the way democracy is being interpreted by some political actors.
He suggested that the narrative surrounding opposition politics has become centered on a few individuals instead of broader democratic participation.
According to him, democratic competition should not be limited to the involvement of specific politicians, as every qualified Nigerian should have the opportunity to seek elective office regardless of whether certain prominent figures decide to contest.
He argued that democracy should be measured by openness and equal participation rather than by the presence or absence of particular candidates.
The minister further maintained that reducing the strength of the opposition to the political ambitions of a handful of individuals does not accurately reflect the principles of a democratic system.
He said political contests should remain open to all eligible aspirants and should not be viewed solely through the participation of well-known political figures.
He said, “That’s the level we’ve taken ourselves to, defining democracy by the participation of Atiku and Peter Obi. If they don’t participate no Northern Nigerian can run in those positions, democracy is only when Atiku and Obi contest, that’s when we are talking about opposition.”
