Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has defended continuity in governance, saying sustained development requires successive administrations to build on existing policies rather than abandon them for untested alternatives. He spoke on Tuesday, September 15, while delivering the centenary anniversary lecture of the Yoruba Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos.
The lecture, titled “Democracy, Governance and the Lagos Spirit: A Century of Excellence,” focused on the relationship between democracy, governance and Lagos’ development. Sanwo-Olu said the state’s development blueprint since the return of democracy in 1999 had been sustained by successive administrations building on the vision of their predecessors.
Ahead of the 2027 elections, the governor challenged opposition parties to present credible ideas capable of competing with what he described as the APC’s development record, rather than seeking a change of government simply for the sake of change. He said voters should be offered clear alternatives with policies that can demonstrate how they would improve on existing outcomes.
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted projects and investments in transportation, education, healthcare, agriculture, technology and infrastructure as examples of the state’s long-term development approach. He argued that the impact of governance should ultimately be measured by how public policies affect the daily lives of ordinary residents.
The centenary celebration also featured the unveiling of the Yoruba Tennis Club’s history book, the foundation-laying ceremony for its proposed Legacy Building and an exhibition of historical and archival materials. The club, established in 1926, used the milestone to reflect on its century-long contribution to Lagos’ social and civic development.
