In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Umar Sani, former Presidential Aide, discussed financial management and accountability among ministers in Nigeria’s federal government.

During the interview, Sani stated, “Nyesom Wike is the only minister who does not have TSA, so he is allowed to spend money anyhow.” He highlighted what he perceives as a lack of oversight in Wike’s handling of funds, emphasizing the implications of operating outside the Treasury Single Account (TSA) system.

Sani explained that his remarks were intended to draw attention to the importance of financial accountability, stressing that the TSA ensures transparency and proper monitoring of public funds. According to him, exceptions to this system can create opportunities for unchecked expenditure, undermining fiscal discipline and public trust.

He further noted that Wike’s unique position without TSA oversight demonstrates how systemic gaps or special privileges can lead to perceived or actual misuse of resources. Sani argued that strict adherence to financial regulations is crucial for maintaining integrity and promoting equitable governance.

He also emphasized that citizens have a role in demanding transparency, suggesting that public scrutiny helps reinforce proper financial practices and discourages arbitrary spending by officials.

Sani concluded by asserting that the situation with Wike illustrates the need for consistent application of financial controls across all government offices, maintaining that accountability, regulation, and adherence to standardized systems are essential for responsible governance and the protection of public resources in Nigeria.
