Troops of 82 Division/Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, working with DSS operatives, have arrested a suspected commander of a kidnapping syndicate in Enugu State and recovered four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
The suspect was arrested during an intelligence-led operation in the Gariki General Area while allegedly attempting to flee Enugu State.
The operation followed investigations into the August 2 abduction of two people in Udi LGA. The Army said an earlier operation had neutralised one syndicate member and arrested another, whose interrogation provided intelligence that led to the commander and the location of the group’s arms cache.
Troops subsequently searched Umuchingu Ujenike Forest and recovered the four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of ammunition.
The suspect was also found with $1,000, ₦785,900 and other items described by the Army as incriminating.
The Army said preliminary investigations linked the suspect to several kidnapping operations across the South-East and North-Central regions. He remains in custody for further interrogation as security forces work to identify and arrest other members and collaborators.
