President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Army, describing it as a strategic force that continues to safeguard Nigeria’s security while contributing to peace and stability across Africa and the world.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the President praised the Army’s legacy of courage, professionalism, and resilience in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and participating in regional and United Nations peacekeeping missions.

Tinubu pledged sustained government support for the Army’s modernisation through improved troop welfare, the acquisition of advanced military equipment, and the integration of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, to enhance operational effectiveness against evolving security threats.

Speaking on the theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” the President said the theme reflects the enduring relationship between the Army and the Nigerian people. He also paid tribute to fallen heroes, assuring that their families would continue to receive government support and recognition.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara also commended the Nigerian Army for its role in maintaining peace and protecting critical national assets in the Niger Delta, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting military operations in the state.

Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the Nigerian Army remains committed to modernising its capabilities through improved equipment, infrastructure development, indigenous innovation, and stronger collaboration with government institutions, international partners, and citizens to address emerging security challenges.

The grand finale featured a colourful military parade, tactical demonstrations, equipment displays, research and development exhibitions, and the presentation of commendation awards to outstanding personnel. The event was attended by former Presidents Yakubu Gowon and Olusegun Obasanjo, military chiefs from 17 African countries, senior government officials, and other dignitaries.
