Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited Minna, Niger State, to convey President Bola Tinubu’s condolences to Governor Umaru Bago, the bereaved families and the people of the state over the deaths of 37 suspected miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The 37 men died while in NSCDC custody, with the circumstances surrounding their deaths still under investigation. Shettima assured the families that the Federal Government would get to the root of the tragedy and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable through due process.
The Vice President also announced a ₦250 million Federal Government support package for the families of the deceased. He said every citizen, including those in state custody, is entitled to protection, while stressing that the bereaved families deserve answers and justice.
Shettima urged Nigerians not to politicise the tragedy or use it to demonise Governor Bago, while Governor Bago pledged the state’s cooperation with the ongoing investigation. The Federal Government has already constituted an independent committee to investigate the deaths.
