Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has paid tribute to veteran entertainer Charly Boy (Charles Oputa) and renowned environmentalist Newton Jibunoh, describing them as two extraordinary Nigerians whose lives continue to inspire patriotism, courage, and service to humanity.
Obi made the remarks after attending the launch of “999: The Memoir of Charly Boy” in Lagos and later visiting the newly established Newton Jibunoh Centre and Museum in Asaba.
He commended Charly Boy for using his experience as a prostate cancer survivor to champion men’s health awareness through his foundation, saying the campaign for early detection and better access to treatment deserves national support.
Obi also praised Newton Jibunoh, popularly known as the “Desert Warrior,” for his historic expeditions across the Sahara Desert, describing him as a living icon whose life reflects courage, resilience, and determination. He added that Jibunoh’s journeys serve as a reminder of a time when travelling across Nigeria and beyond was much safer, stressing that the country must work towards restoring security, unity, and prosperity.
