Veteran journalist and Atiku Abubakar’s media aide Mazi Paul Ibe has claimed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is working for President Bola Tinubu rather than any opposition figure, citing a statement by a Yoruba leadership forum figure and conversations he says took place at the highest level.
Speaking on Symfoni, Ibe said the perception that Obasanjo is backing an opposition candidate is a smokescreen, and that proposals were made to the former president encouraging him to ensure his kinsman does not lose his second-term election.
He argued that Obasanjo, long celebrated as a pan-Nigerian statesman, is now retreating into his tribal enclave, exposing what Ibe called a strain of hypocrisy in his current political posture.
In Ibe’s words: “The person that Obasanjo is working with is President Bola Tinubu. We are aware of proposals that have been made to former President Obasanjo in which he was encouraged to ensure that his kinsman does not lose his second term election. So Obasanjo is in bed with Tinubu.
He’s working for, not even with, Tinubu. That whole persona of him as a pan-Nigerian is giving way now to the local.
