According to a report by PUNCH on Thursday 1 October 2026, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on the Federal Government to reduce the price of petrol, introduce a nationwide wage award and begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage.
The labour union made the demands in an Independence Day statement signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, as workers and households continue to face rising costs of food, transportation, rent and education.
The NLC said the sharp increase in petrol prices since the removal of the subsidy in 2023 had contributed significantly to the current cost-of-living crisis.
