The Nigerian Army and Indonesian military have agreed to strengthen defence cooperation, with emphasis on operational effectiveness, professional military training, technology and institutional capacity. Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu stated this on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in Abuja.
Shaibu made the remarks while receiving Indonesia’s Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Colonel Aslam Setiawan, at Army Headquarters. He described the longstanding military relationship between both countries as mutually beneficial, particularly through professional military education, exchange of operational experience and participation in multinational exercises.
The COAS called for expanded collaboration in counterinsurgency, emerging technologies and other areas of shared military interest. He said increased exchanges of expertise and technology could improve situational awareness, operational planning and battlefield effectiveness as security threats continue to evolve.
Shaibu also disclosed that the Nigerian Army is expanding from eight to 12 divisions, stressing that the development would require additional investment in infrastructure, training, technology and institutional support.
Setiawan reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to stronger defence ties, citing engagements such as Exercise Super Garuda Shield as opportunities to improve interoperability and share military experience.
