The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a large-scale counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex. The raid, carried out on October 14 by operatives of its Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, followed intelligence reports about illegal activities at the complex.

NAFDAC said its officers discovered more than 20 illegal stores operating from makeshift parking spaces. Suspects were allegedly caught blending counterfeit versions of popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidating expired or unsafe drinks for resale, and storing banned imported products.

Two suspects were arrested during the operation, while the seized products were valued at more than ₦2 billion. The agency said the discovery exposed the scale of the alleged illegal trade in alcoholic beverages and the potential risks posed by unsafe products entering the market.

NAFDAC has urged members of the public to report suspected counterfeit production, the revalidation of expired products and the sale of illegal beverages. Complaints can be made through its official hotline: 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322).
