Kanu Agabi, former attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and minister of justice, says there is a need for the removal of the immunity clause from the 1999 constitution to strengthen the fight against corruption.

Section 308 of the 1999 constitution as amended, titled “Restrictions on legal proceedings (immunity clause)”, protects presidents, vice-presidents, governors and deputy governors from prosecution.

Speaking at the 15th convocation lecture of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja on Friday, the former minister said the inclusion of the clause was for the sake of the nation, rather than political office holders.
