The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has convened an emergency conference with senior leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to address national security concerns and announce major reforms.
The high-level meeting, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 5, 2026, brought together the Force Management Team, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and Commissioners of Police.
During the conference, the IGP emphasized the need for transparency, discipline, and accountability, stressing that modern policing must be intelligence-driven and responsive to evolving security challenges.
He also addressed the recent extrajudicial killing in Delta State, confirming that officers involved have been dismissed and will face prosecution, reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct.
Providing operational updates, Disu disclosed that police operations in April 2026 led to the arrest of dozens of suspects linked to terrorism, murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, and cultism. He added that several kidnapped victims were rescued, alongside the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and stolen vehicles.
As part of reforms, the IGP announced the creation of a new tactical unit, the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), aimed at strengthening response to serious crimes through intelligence-led operations and strict accountability measures.
He further directed Commissioners of Police nationwide to intensify community policing through regular engagement with local leaders and improved communication channels.
The reforms, according to the IGP, are part of ongoing efforts to enhance professionalism, protect human rights, and rebuild public trust in the police.
