The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has dismissed claims by Nasir El-Rufai’s wife and son that the former Kaduna State governor was denied food and medical attention while in custody.

The commission confirmed that El-Rufai received regular meals, medical consultations, and family visits within the standard visiting hours of 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at its Abuja headquarters.

Okor Odey, ICPC’s deputy director of media, explained that the family arrived outside the visiting window on May 15, 2026, which contributed to the misunderstanding. He emphasised that all detainees, including high-profile figures, are treated humanely and in full compliance with Nigerian law and institutional protocols, with access to legal representation and medical care as required.

The ICPC also highlighted that prior medical consultations and in-house healthcare had been facilitated for El-Rufai and that the claims circulating in the media misrepresented the facts. Security and verification procedures are strictly followed to ensure the safety, welfare, and dignity of all detainees.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to lawful and transparent detention practices and urged the public to rely on official statements for accurate information. El-Rufai remains in custody pending fulfillment of bail conditions, with ICPC assuring that his rights and access to care continue to be fully observed.
