In a recent interview on Advocacy for Good Governance, on Thursday, September 17, 2026, Peter Obi, NDC Presidential Candidate, discussed insecurity in Nigeria and his decision to visit areas affected by violence across the country.
Obi spoke about his movements across different parts of Nigeria and responded to questions concerning his willingness to travel to areas experiencing serious security challenges.
Speaking about his approach to insecurity, Obi said, “I can’t sit in Abuja when people are being killed daily in Zamfara; I will be there.” He explained that leadership requires being present in places where Nigerians are facing difficulties.
According to Obi, he had travelled to several parts of Nigeria by road, including southern Borno, southern Kaduna and other areas where security challenges have affected communities.
The NDC presidential candidate said he could not remain in Abuja when Nigerians were being killed in different parts of the country. He maintained that visiting affected communities was part of understanding their problems directly.
Obi also discussed the relationship between insecurity and agricultural productivity. He explained that farmers are unable to fully utilise their farms when insecurity prevents them from accessing their means of livelihood.
He said securing the country would encourage farmers to return to their farms and increase agricultural production. According to him, Nigeria has the potential to become more productive if its security challenges are addressed.
Obi further maintained that political leaders should remain connected with citizens and understand the realities they face in their communities.
He concluded that his willingness to travel to areas affected by insecurity was part of his approach to leadership and his commitment to engaging directly with Nigerians across the country.
