Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on members of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, and the judiciary to strengthen justice, institutions, and legal values as key foundations for Nigeria’s future.
Jonathan made the call at the opening ceremony of the NBA Yenagoa Branch 2026 Law Week, themed, “Securing the Future: Sustainable National Asset Protection in Africa; Opportunities, Risks and Regulatory Pathways.”
Speaking during the plenary session, the former president said the Bench and the Bar remain stewards of Nigeria’s legal system and guardians of the country’s regulatory frameworks.
He urged legal practitioners and judicial officers to fully embrace their role in nation-building, stressing that Nigeria’s progress depends on the impartiality of the judiciary, the strength of institutions, and the integrity of national values.
Jonathan said the country’s future can only be secured when justice is stronger than power, institutions are stronger than individuals, and the law protects both the powerful and the vulnerable equally.
He also called for thoughtful reform of Nigeria’s post-colonial education system to meet the demands of a changing world.
According to him, these ideals remain the foundation of a just, stable, and prosperous society.
