The Federal Government has unveiled plans to gradually end Nigeria’s dependence on crude oil exports as it moves to position the country as Africa’s leading refining hub.
The strategy focuses on expanding domestic refining capacity through existing and upcoming refineries, with the goal of processing more crude oil locally rather than exporting it in its raw form. Officials say the move is expected to boost value addition, create jobs, reduce fuel imports, and strengthen the nation’s economy.
By refining crude oil within the country, the government hopes to increase the production of petroleum products for local consumption and export to other African markets, enhancing Nigeria’s role in the continent’s energy sector.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to maximize the value of Nigeria’s oil resources while reducing reliance on the export of unprocessed crude.
