Nigeria’s drive to eliminate circulating polio variants has received renewed commitment as the Northern Leaders Committee held its first quarterly meeting of 2026, bringing together government officials, health experts, traditional institutions, and development partners to strengthen Primary Health Care (PHC) delivery and sustain national health gains.

The high-level meeting, convened by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), reviewed progress in PHC implementation and outlined critical measures aimed at improving healthcare services and strengthening routine immunization, particularly in vulnerable communities across Northern Nigeria.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, stressed the importance of sustained commitment, stronger coordination, and active community participation in consolidating gains recorded in immunization programmes and the fight against polio.

Discussions focused on enhancing healthcare service delivery at the grassroots level, expanding routine immunization coverage, and addressing operational challenges limiting access to vaccines in underserved areas.

Development partners and stakeholders acknowledged Nigeria’s significant progress in polio eradication efforts but cautioned that the continued transmission of variant poliovirus underscores the need for sustained interventions, stronger disease surveillance systems, and increased community ownership of health programmes.
Participants also emphasized the importance of prioritizing practical solutions to existing healthcare challenges through improved accountability, strengthened healthcare infrastructure, and closer collaboration among government institutions, traditional leaders, and development partners.

The meeting further reaffirmed commitments to scaling up Primary Health Care services and promoting community-driven healthcare systems capable of encouraging positive health-seeking behaviour among citizens.

Stakeholders noted that empowering communities to take ownership of government health interventions remains essential to achieving Nigeria’s broader health security goals and ensuring long-term sustainability of healthcare programmes.

As Nigeria continues its journey toward a polio-free future, participants maintained that sustained political will, strategic partnerships, and grassroots engagement will remain central to protecting children and strengthening the nation’s public health system.
