FG Mourns Ambassador-Designate To Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele

Federal Government has announced the passing of Ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away in Ankara, Türkiye, after a prolonged illness.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Lele died on 19th April 2026.

Until his death, he served as Director, Middle East and Gulf Division.

48 years-old, Lele was recently confirmed by the Senate and appointed by President Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s envoy to Algeria.

Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State in 1976, an Economics Graduate of Bayero University, Kano, served in Nigerian missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.

The Ministry commended his intellectual depth and commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy, describing his passing as a “monumental loss to the foreign service and the nation.”

Permanent Secretary Dunoma Umar Ahmed received his remains at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and described him as a hardworking and humble officer.

Ambassador Lele was buried on Wednesday in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Ministry extended condolences to his family, associates, and the Bauchi State Government.
