Amnesty International Nigeria has called for the immediate and unconditional release of human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore following his remand by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to the organization, its staff, supporters, and volunteers attended the court session in solidarity with Sowore, whom it says has been repeatedly targeted by Nigerian authorities for speaking out against injustice and demanding accountability.
Amnesty International described Sowore’s detention as arbitrary, arguing that he is being held solely for the peaceful exercise of his fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression.
The rights group further stated that the prosecution of Sowore reflects a broader pattern of shrinking civic space and an escalating crackdown on human rights and dissenting voices in Nigeria.
Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to uphold their obligations under national and international human rights laws by respecting, protecting, promoting, and fulfilling the rights of all citizens, including the freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and media freedom.
