According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on April 15, 2026, the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to defending democratic principles, declaring that it will resist any effort aimed at silencing opposition voices in Nigeria.

Mark made the statement on Tuesday during the party’s eighth national convention held at the Rainbow Events Centre in Abuja.

The former Senate President acknowledged that the ADC has faced significant political challenges, including what he described as acts of betrayal and repeated attempts to obstruct the party’s activities.

He expressed concern over recent developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), noting that such issues raise questions about the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic system.

According to him, safeguarding the integrity of electoral processes is essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring the survival of democracy.

Despite these challenges, Mark stated that the pressures faced by the party have ultimately strengthened its internal cohesion and expanded its support base.

He emphasized that a vibrant opposition is critical in any democratic society, serving as a necessary check on those in power.

The ADC chairman also alleged that there were coordinated efforts to prevent the convention from taking place. He claimed that these attempts involved the use of legal actions, institutional mechanisms, and administrative obstacles.

Nevertheless, he noted that the party successfully convened the gathering, demonstrating its resilience.

Mark reiterated that the ADC would not succumb to intimidation or political pressure. He stressed that the party remains determined to protect democratic space and continue advocating for inclusive political participation in Nigeria.

Underscoring his position, he stated: “We also made it clear that in an ever shrinking democratic space that is orchestrated by those in the ruling party, the ADC will not bow, we will not cower, and we will not retreat.

We will not surrender to tyranny, because what is at stake is not just about the ADC or the opposition. It is the very survival of our democracy.
