Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for urgent action to address some of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, including insecurity, flooding and the high cost of living, as the Senate resumed plenary after its annual recess.
Akpabio, speaking as lawmakers returned to plenary, said the realities confronting Nigerians must remain at the centre of the Senate’s work. He particularly expressed concern over the abductions of Nigerians in Marisa and at Dekera Mosque, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue those still in captivity and strengthen the protection of vulnerable communities.
On the economy, the Senate President said the ongoing reforms must ultimately translate into improvements in the daily lives of Nigerians. He said citizens should be able to feel the impact of economic policies in their homes, businesses and communities.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Akpabio also called on political leaders to ensure their campaigns remain peaceful and focused on issues. He stressed that no electoral contest should result in the loss of Nigerian lives.
The Senate also received six communications from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu covering appointments, the 2026 Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) budget and establishment bills. The communications were referred to the relevant Senate committees for consideration. Lawmakers also observed tributes for former Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris and the late Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.
