Nigeria Democratic Congress Presidential candidate Peter Obi has told Nigerians that there will be no “fake promises” as he outlined his concerns over insecurity, poverty, unemployment, hunger and other challenges facing the country.
Obi made the remarks on Monday, September 28, during a town hall meeting with residents in Sokoto, following a courtesy visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III. The engagement focused on issues affecting Nigerians, including national unity, security, education, healthcare, corruption, agriculture, power and infrastructure.
According to Obi, Nigeria must confront insecurity decisively while also addressing what he described as human insecurity. He said poverty, unemployment, hunger and hopelessness must be tackled if the country is to reduce criminality and build a safer society.
The former Anambra State governor also spoke against money politics, arguing that poverty can make citizens vulnerable to vote-buying. He said this creates a cycle in which a system that impoverishes citizens is repeatedly rewarded, calling for an end to what he described as transactional politics.
Obi said the challenges facing Nigeria are enormous but maintained that courage, competence, compassion, character and collective determination are necessary to begin changing the country’s story.
