President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defended his administration’s decision to remove fuel subsidy, saying the move saved Nigeria from imminent bankruptcy and helped restore economic stability.
Tinubu made the statement while receiving state governors who visited him in Lagos to celebrate Sallah and mark the third anniversary of his administration.
According to the President, the decision was painful and difficult, but necessary to stop the country from sliding into financial collapse. He said Nigeria had survived the pressure that came with the reform and was now beginning to see signs of recovery.
Tinubu noted that the economy is growing, agriculture is improving, and government revenues are being redirected toward development instead of being drained by subsidy payments.
He also assured Nigerians that his administration would continue to pursue policies aimed at reducing hardship, creating jobs, strengthening food security, and promoting inclusive growth.
The President’s remarks come amid continued public debate over the impact of fuel subsidy removal, which has been linked to higher transport costs, rising food prices, and increased pressure on households across the country.
