The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has disclosed that it carried out 87 relief interventions for about 17,000 persons displaced by various disasters across the North-West in 2025.

The North-West Zonal Director of NEMA, Sani Lokoja, made this known while reviewing the agency’s relief activities during the year. Lokoja said the displaced persons were victims of banditry, flooding, rainstorms, windstorms, fire outbreaks and communal clashes in different parts of the zone.

He stated that the agency conducted a total of 87 relief interventions during the period under review, providing emergency support to affected individuals and communities.

According to him, Kaduna State recorded the highest number of interventions with 34 operations, followed by Sokoto State with 33 and Kano State with 20.Lokoja said Kebbi State recorded 16 interventions, while Katsina State recorded 14, Jigawa State recorded seven and Zamfara State recorded six. He said banditry remained a major cause of displacement in Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and parts of Kebbi states.

According to Lokoja, flooding and windstorms accounted for most of the interventions in Kano and Jigawa states, while fire outbreaks affected both urban and rural communities across the zone. He said NEMA provided relief materials and emergency support to displaced and affected persons in line with its mandate.

The zonal director added that the agency worked closely with state and local governments, as well as other relevant stakeholders, to stabilise affected communities, stressing the need for improved preparedness and coordination to address rising security and climate-related risks in the North-West.
