According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Friday, July 24, 2026, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has urged members of staff of the commission to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, professionalism, and selflessness, warning that the electoral body cannot afford to disappoint Nigerians during the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan gave the charge on Friday during a working visit and interactive session with the commission’s management and staff at the INEC headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
He stressed the importance of maintaining the credibility of the electoral process, noting that the commission’s performance would play a critical role in strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
Addressing the staff, the INEC chairman emphasised the need for commitment and dedication in carrying out electoral responsibilities, stating that every official of the commission must remain focused on delivering credible, transparent, and acceptable elections.
He warned against any form of compromise that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process, adding that the actions of INEC personnel would significantly influence public trust in future elections.
According to him, the commission must remain steadfast in its commitment to fairness and impartiality at all levels of its operations.
Amupitan also pointed out that Nigeria’s electoral process continues to attract considerable attention from both citizens and the international community.
He noted that stakeholders within and outside the country are closely monitoring preparations for the 2027 general elections, making it imperative for the commission to uphold the highest standards of accountability and transparency.
He said INEC must ensure that its activities inspire confidence among Nigerians while meeting international expectations for credible democratic processes.
The INEC chairman disclosed that the commission was already taking practical steps to strengthen its operational capacity ahead of the next general elections.
According to him, efforts are underway to improve logistics, upgrade infrastructure, and expand transport fleets across INEC offices in all states of the federation.
He explained that these measures are aimed at enhancing the commission’s efficiency in the deployment of personnel and election materials, while addressing some of the logistical challenges experienced during previous electoral exercises.
He further assured the staff that the commission remained committed to continuous improvement by learning from previous elections and implementing reforms where necessary.
Amupitan stated that the objective was to build on past experiences and ensure that every aspect of election management was strengthened before the 2027 polls.
He urged members of staff to embrace the reforms and contribute positively toward achieving the commission’s goal of delivering elections that meet the expectations of Nigerians and the global community.
