According to a report by the Nigerian Tribune on Saturday, May 23, 2026, former Rivers State governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has stated that re-establishing respect for the rule of law would be his top priority if he becomes Nigeria’s president.

Amaechi made this known during an interview on Friday, where he emphasized the urgent need to strengthen institutions and uphold democratic values across the country.

He argued that Nigeria’s progress depends largely on adherence to law and order, insisting that government institutions must operate independently rather than being used as tools to intimidate or weaken opposition parties.

Questioning the actions of the ruling party, Amaechi said, “If the APC said they are strong, why are they influencing the government institutions against the opposition? Why won’t they leave the rule of law?” He suggested that true political strength should not rely on manipulating state structures but on fair competition within a democratic framework.

The former presidential aspirant reiterated that respect for legal processes would serve as the cornerstone of his leadership if elected.

According to him, rebuilding public trust in governance begins with ensuring that laws are applied fairly and consistently, without bias or political interference.

Amaechi stressed that his administration would prioritize restoring order and discipline within public institutions, making it clear that no individual or group would be above the law.

“The first thing I will do as president of Nigeria is to rule by the law. There has to be law and order,” he said.

He maintained that only through strict adherence to the rule of law can Nigeria achieve stability, protect democratic freedoms, and create an environment where both government and opposition can operate on a level playing field.
