Vice President Kashim Shettima has backed a proposed $5 billion Global Partnership for Education (GPE) financing campaign aimed at mobilising funding for education worldwide.
Shettima spoke at the “A New Era for Education Financing” high-level event held in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Nigeria and Italy are working with partners to advance the GPE campaign.
The Vice President described education as an investment in Nigeria’s economic future, national productivity, prosperity and stability. He said Nigeria’s participation goes beyond seeking international assistance, stressing the importance of domestic investment alongside development support and other financing sources.
Shettima also highlighted Nigeria’s partnership with the World Bank and GPE through HOPE-EDU, which is expected to reach about 29 million children and 500,000 teachers. The global campaign seeks to mobilise $5 billion to unlock additional education financing for partner countries.
