Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has held a high-level roundtable with the United Nations Global Compact Networks and regional partners from Africa and the Caribbean to develop solutions to climate threats facing Lagos.
The meeting focused on urgent measures to protect coastal communities and critical infrastructure from rising sea levels, coastal erosion and recurring flooding, while also exploring sustainable financing for climate-resilience projects.
Sanwo-Olu said Lagos, as a low-lying coastal megacity, is already experiencing the effects of climate change through flooding and increasing pressure on roads, homes and businesses. He stressed that the scale of the challenge requires practical action rather than prolonged policy discussions.
The governor also called for stronger partnerships with the private sector and international development institutions, saying government funding alone is insufficient to finance the long-term infrastructure needed to protect Lagos from severe environmental threats.
