The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what he described as the President’s non-interference in the activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The monarch said allowing the electoral commission to carry out its responsibilities without political interference could strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Ooni Ogunwusi made the remarks shortly before beginning a seven-day spiritual seclusion ahead of the 2026 Olojo Festival in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
He also commended residents of Osun State for participating in the recently concluded governorship election, saying elections should continue to provide citizens with the opportunity to freely choose their leaders.
The traditional ruler urged politicians to place the national interest above personal and partisan differences, warning against actions or statements capable of undermining Nigeria’s unity and democratic institutions.
He said political power was temporary and encouraged leaders to focus on improving the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
The Ooni further disclosed that his prayers during the seven-day seclusion would cover Nigeria’s democratic process, peace, unity and the welfare of young Nigerians.
His comments come as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, with INEC expected to play a central role in the electoral process.
