The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has commended the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for using technology to improve its operations and tackle fraudulent activities in the mobilisation and deployment of Corps Members.
Alausa gave the commendation in Abuja when the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, paid him a courtesy visit. He praised the Scheme’s digital transformation, particularly its technology-driven registration and deployment processes.
The minister noted that the move to digitise NYSC registration initially faced resistance from some sections of the public but has significantly improved efficiency and gained wider acceptance.
Nafiu disclosed that the NYSC had strengthened security features on Corps Members’ Call-up and Posting Letters after fraudsters began cloning the documents and issuing fake letters to prospective employers while allegedly extorting money from unsuspecting graduates.
According to the NYSC DG, the enhanced security measures have made the documents more difficult to manipulate, while employers can verify their authenticity. The introduction of QR codes has also virtually eliminated document cloning within the NYSC system.
The minister and NYSC DG also discussed deeper digital integration between the Ministry of Education and the Scheme to strengthen the verification of educational qualifications and prevent certificate racketeering.
A joint committee comprising officials of the Ministry and NYSC has been constituted to strengthen collaboration and ensure that only qualified and eligible Nigerian graduates participate in the national service programme.
