Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has asked India to extend its amnesty programme for Nigerians who have overstayed their visas, allowing them to voluntarily return home without facing penalties.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu made the request during a bilateral meeting with her Indian counterpart, Dr S. Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

The two ministers also discussed a possible Memorandum of Understanding on the transfer of sentenced persons, which would provide a framework for the humane and orderly transfer of eligible prisoners between Nigeria and India.

They further identified education and cultural exchanges as important areas for strengthening relations and people-to-people ties between both countries.

The ministers also reviewed economic cooperation, with discussions focused on expanding trade and investment and creating new opportunities for stronger economic partnerships between Nigeria and India.
