In a recent interview shared by TV Platinum, National Chairman of the People’s Redemption Party, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, raised concerns over the role of Nigeria’s electoral body ahead of future elections.
Speaking on the state of the nation’s democracy, Baba-Ahmed warned that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must remain neutral in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
He stressed that any perception of bias could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
According to him, “INEC is putting itself forward and making it appear as if it is a party in this election; it is not.” He explained that the commission’s primary duty is to organize and conduct elections in a manner that is transparent, fair, and acceptable to all political stakeholders.
The PRP chairman noted that democracy can only thrive when institutions act within their defined roles without external influence or interference.
He cautioned that actions capable of creating doubt about INEC’s independence may weaken the credibility of future elections, especially as political activities gradually build up ahead of 2027.
Baba-Ahmed further called on relevant authorities to ensure that democratic institutions are protected from undue pressure.
He also urged political actors to respect the rules guiding the electoral process, adding that fairness and accountability remain essential to sustaining Nigeria’s democratic system.
