The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, has engaged staff of the Commission from the North-West Zone to assess its preparedness for the 2027 general elections.
The statement from the Commission says it was an opportunity to review previous election experiences, identify shortcomings and strengthen preparations for improved conduct of the forthcoming elections.
It adds that late arrival of electoral materials, technical glitches and pockets of violence were among the challenges recorded in some areas during the last elections.
With preparations intensifying, the electoral umpire is reviewing key areas, including voter registration and collection of Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, logistics, operational challenges, and the deployment and management of Information and Communication Technology, ICT.
Professor Amupitan held the assessment meeting with INEC officials in Kaduna, where he urged staff to uphold the Code of Ethics guiding the Commission.
The INEC Chairman was also at the palace of the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, where he assured the traditional ruler that preparations for the 2027 elections are ongoing, with emphasis on inclusivity in the electoral process.
The Emir of Zazzau thanked Professor Amupitan for the visit and called on INEC to ensure the timely distribution of electoral materials to polling units and guarantee a credible election.
He also urged Nigerians to cooperate with the Commission and remain law-abiding during and after the national assignment.
