According to Channels television, the Federal Government has released funds for the payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) to academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for the period covering January to August 2026.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Wednesday after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation, according to a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo.
Alausa said the release of the funds was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to implement agreements reached with academic staff and improve the welfare of education personnel across the country.
The minister explained that the payment was being implemented in line with the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria–Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN–ASUU) Agreement.
He stated that all federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education had been notified to begin the payment process for eligible academic staff.
According to Alausa, the development demonstrates the government’s commitment to honouring approved agreements with workers in the education sector while ensuring that personnel receive the benefits due to them.
The minister also disclosed that arrangements were being made for the payment of the corresponding allowance to non-academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.
He said funding for the non-academic staff allowance was expected to be made available within the coming weeks.
Alausa further reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to improving the welfare of education personnel as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s education system.
He said the Federal Government remained focused on improving staff welfare, upgrading infrastructure and enhancing the overall quality of education under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The minister’s announcement comes amid continued efforts by the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure the implementation of agreements and interventions targeted at personnel across tertiary institutions.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring that approved interventions and agreements are effectively implemented throughout the education sector.
The payment of the academic tools allowance is expected to provide financial support to eligible academic staff while reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing issues relating to the welfare of workers in federal tertiary institutions.
The development also signals an ongoing effort by the Federal Government to maintain engagement with academic and non-academic personnel and strengthen conditions for effective teaching, learning and research in tertiary institutions.
