Nigeria is advocating stronger and sustained international support for victims and survivors of terrorism, beyond immediate humanitarian assistance.
A statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, says the Defence Minister General Christopher Gwabin Musa stated this at the UN Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism in New York.
General Musa highlighted the impact of terrorism on Africa, noting that Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for about 60 percent of global terrorism deaths in 2025, stressing the need for medical, psychosocial, economic and reintegration support for survivors.
The Minister also disclosed that Nigeria secured 865 terrorism-related convictions in 2026, reaffirming the country’s commitment to accountability.
He called for stronger international cooperation through peer learning, inclusive partnerships and targeted UN support, while reaffirming Nigeria’s readiness to share its experience at the International Conference on Victims of Terrorism in Baghdad later this year.
