Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has emphasised the need for modern military training and professional military education to prepare Nigerian troops for evolving security threats. He made this known on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during a visit to the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako, as part of efforts to strengthen defence cooperation between Nigeria and Rwanda.

Shaibu commended the academy’s training standards, discipline and professionalism, particularly the tactical skills demonstrated during a Special Forces display. He said modern security challenges require effective leadership, innovative training and the ability to adapt to complex operational environments.

The army chief also urged the academy’s leadership to prepare for the proposed arrival of the first batch of Nigerian officer cadets under a planned exchange programme. He called for both countries to share experiences in counterterrorism and counterinsurgency to improve operational planning and cooperation in tackling shared security challenges.

The Rwanda Military Academy welcomed the proposed partnership, highlighting its training in military tactics, leadership, physical fitness, logistics and peace support operations. The Nigerian Army said the engagement forms part of its efforts to strengthen international military partnerships and improve the professional development of future commanders.
