Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has met members of the Akpu Sellers Association at Sheda and Sheda Galadima markets in Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, to mark the International Day of Rural Women on Thursday, October 15, 2026. During the visit, he engaged the traders on the economic difficulties affecting their daily lives and businesses.
According to Obi, the women raised concerns about worsening hardship, declining customer patronage and inadequate water supply. They also appealed for access to microcredit to help strengthen their businesses and improve their livelihoods. Obi said he assured them of his commitment to supporting rural women and other Nigerians.
Obi highlighted the role rural women play in food production, supporting families and sustaining local economies. He noted that many continue to face poverty, insecurity, limited access to credit and inadequate healthcare despite their contributions to their communities.
He said empowering rural women and investing in their businesses would be central to efforts to reduce poverty and expand economic opportunities. Obi also called for greater investment in rural communities, arguing that women should have access to the support and resources needed to prosper regardless of where they live.
